CHAPTER 8 Summary for road vehicle signage applications

This is for guidance only, please ensure you obtain a full copy of the Manual from the Department of Transport.

Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual ( Traffic Safety Measures & Signs for Road Works & Temporary Situations 2006) includes sections 05.2 & 05.5 relating to the conspicuity markings of vehicles stopping on the highway for works purposes or inspections.

In addition to laying out specifications for the colour of the vehicle, section 05.2 sets out the requirements for conspicuity markings for general maintenance vehicles stopping on high-speed roads.

The requirements show 4 acceptable options of markings of which:

c) is chevron markings comprising alternate strips of fluorescent orange-red retroreflective material and fluorescent yellow non reflective material, of not less than 150mm width each inclined at 45 – 60 degrees to the horizontal and pointing upwards, or

d) is a solid block of fluorescent orange-red retroreflective material.

The markings described above should cover as much of the rear-facing portion of the vehicle as possible without obscuring windows, vehicle lighting or registration plates.

The specification also calls for Red retroreflective tape to be applied to all rear facing edges of open doors, guardrails and equipment lockers.

Maintenance vehicles also need to show a "HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE" legend or a "MOTORWAY MAINTENANCE" legend when working on motorways only.
Specification for this is in diagram 7404

Section 05.5 sets out the requirements for conspicuity markings for vehicles used in Temporary Traffic Management situations.

Inspection / Supervisor vehicles should have "Class ref 2" to BS EN 12899-1 or microprismatic reflective markings on the rear of the vehicle in accordance with paragraph 05.2.3 ( c ) or ( d ) above and a Company or client livery on side of vehicle.
Also required is a 70mm capital letter height "HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE" sign (externally mounted on rear of vehicle)

Traffic Management / Maintenance Vehicles (personnel / equipment carrier) should have "Class ref 2" to BS EN 12899-1 or microprismatic reflective markings on the rear of the vehicle in accordance with paragraph 05.2.3 ( c ) or ( d ) above.
Also required is a 140mm capital letter height "HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE" sign (externally mounted on rear of vehicle)

We must stress that the above information has been provided for information purposes only and suggest that if your vehicles are involved in stopping or working on high speed roads that you purchase the full copy of the Traffic Signs Manual to fully acquaint yourselves with the specifications laid down for vehicles being used for this purpose.

fluorescent - yellowMust be highly visible in daylight conditions

Again widely used by the Emergency Services these high spec films offer enhanced daytime visibility and are a good contrast when used alternately with Red reflectives for rear chevrons. These fluorescent films offer no reflective quality at night.

3M 3480 Scotchcal Film - Traditionally the market leader - does not require edge sealing.A high gloss, composite film, offering good durability and easy removal. Available in Saturn Yellow ( 2 year life ) or Red/Orange ( up to 3 year life)

Neon NL7460 - An alternative to the above film. This product is a thinner cast vinyl construction, is easier to mould into recesses and swage lines / curvatures yet still offers the same 2 / 3 year life span.

reflective - redEngineering Grade reflective red vinyls are required.

Used by the Emergency Services prior to Conspicuity Film, this high spec product offers a wide angle of reflectivity and a 7 year durability. Due to thickness and construction it is still not as conformable as standard vinyls, but due to a vinyl base construction it will conform to some complex curvatures and swage lines.

3M 680-10 Scotchlite - Traditionally the market leader - does not require edge sealing. Widely specified and used - ideal for lettering - Dry application recommended.

.

Conspicuity filmsPrismatic marking materials.

Used universally by the Emergency Services, these high visibility films offer the maximum amount of reflectivity (up to 10 times brighter than traditional retro-reflective films). Care must be taken when using these materials though, as they will not conform to complex curves or mould into swage lines or recessed panels. All products have aggressive initial tack adhesives and are ideally computer cut on a flat bed cutter/plotter. Fluorescent versions offer excellent daytime visibility as well as obviously being reflective at night.

Life expectancy is between 3 years (for the fluorescent versions ) and 7 years (for basic colours).

Nikkalite Crystal Grade
Excellent all-round product - Requires edge sealing (usually carried out by the convertor when kits are computer cut) - Generally the most cost-effective film - Dry application only

3M DG3 (was known as DiamondGrade)
Historically the market leader - Requires edge sealing (usually carried out by the convertor when kits are computer cut) - Dry application only

Reflexite VC312 Daybright
Different construction to the two above, thinner basic colours, thick fluorescent colours - Does not require edge sealing - Ideal for lettering - Wet & Dry application - Colours less intense in daylight

The materials are identifiable by the distinctive markings within their construction.
