Chapter 8 Chevrons: Why Your Vehicle Might Legally Need Them

If your vehicle stops or works on a high-speed road — whether that’s motorway maintenance, utility work, recovery, or roadside services — there’s a good chance it needs Chapter 8 chevrons. Here’s what they are, why they exist, and how to know if your fleet needs them.

What Are Chapter 8 Chevrons?

Chapter 8 refers to the eighth section of the Department for Transport’s Traffic Signs Manual, which sets the rules for signing and guarding roadworks and works vehicles on UK roads. Rear vehicle markings are one part of this — high-visibility, alternating red and yellow chevron stripes fitted to the back of a vehicle to make it unmistakably visible to approaching traffic.

Each chevron stripe is angled upward between 45 and 60 degrees, with a minimum width of 150mm. The red stripes are retro-reflective for maximum night-time visibility, while the yellow stripes are fluorescent and non-reflective, giving strong contrast in daylight and at dusk. Chevrons should cover as much of the rear of the vehicle as possible without obscuring lights, windows or the number plate.

Vehicles used for highway maintenance or temporary traffic management also typically need “HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE” text — a minimum of 70mm high for temporary traffic management vehicles, and 140mm for other vehicles carrying personnel or equipment.

Why the Markings Matter

A stationary or slow-moving vehicle on a high-speed road is a serious hazard — drivers approaching at motorway speed need enough warning to react safely. Chapter 8 chevrons exist to close that gap: they make a works vehicle unmistakable, day or night, giving approaching traffic the time it needs to slow down safely. That protects both the people working around the vehicle and the drivers on the road.
